Ronald Donkervoort, owner
Ronald established his farm on a few acres of land in Moss Landing in 1989, and named it Windmill Farm in homage to his birthplace, Holland. He grows crops using sustainable farming methods on eight acres that overlook the ocean using a system of drip irrigation from well water. He enjoys the help of his son Rashid and a few part time workers. Ronald decided to keep the farm small so that he could continue to do what he loves best: farming.
Ronald was drawn to farming at an early age. Before school during his high school years in Holland, he worked at a farm that grew tomatoes and flowers. This experience planted the seeds for his future career as a farmer.
After traveling the world (his other passion) for 12 years including 10 years in India, he followed a Californian he met back to Santa Cruz, and settled off the grid in Ben Lomond. Ronald worked on a local farm for a few years to learn what he needed to know in order to establish his own farm in Moss Landing.
Ronald is friendly and entertaining, and attracts a crowd who enjoy his good humor. “What I value the most in life is being part of the community and providing people with good food. This is much more important to me than money,” he said with a warm smile and twinkle in his bright blue eyes.
