Aptos and Monterey
Organic sourdough loaves and gluten-free pastries made with alternative grains.
Established in 2006, Companion Bakeshop sold solely at farmers markets in Santa Cruz County. Eventually, the business expanded to six farmers markets a week, selling local organic sourdough breads and pastries. In 2010, the bakeshop and its crew found a permanent home in Westside Santa Cruz, where they established their first retail outlet and bakery. They happily greet their customers each day and welcome the opportunity to share their passion and love of baking as well as to create a place where the community can gather.
The bakeshop uses organic grains sourced through Guisto’s Specialty Foods and Flour Mills in San Francisco. It is committed to using local grains, grown specifically for its needs and hopes to pursue future relationships with local grain growers. Pastries are made with organic butter, creams, milks and cheeses, and the bakers strive to create a product of which they are 100 percent proud of for their community.
Workers: Six full-time and 12 part-time employees who specialize in retail and in producing high-quality specialty coffee drinks, sourdough breads and pastries.
At both the Aptos and Monterey market, Companion Bakeshop sells only gluten-free or wheat-free pastries, using instead alternative grains such as oat flour, almond flour, buckwheat and rice flour. Only organic grains and organic dairy are used in its products with chocolate sourced from Tcho Chocolate, a chocolate maker that recently moved its operations from San Francisco to Berkeley.
