History/Philosophy: The Schletewitz family has been growing fruit on their farm for three generations. The land was first purchased by Ron Schletewitz's parents in 1926 and has been in the family ever since. Ron took over the family farm when he was 16 and has sold at farmers markets since 1959. He also worked as the orchard manager at the University of Fresno for three years, in charge of 140 acres. In April 2008, Ron and his wife Annette were honored by the City of Sanger Chamber of Commerce as “Mr. and Mrs. Farmer of the Year.” Annette is a retired school nurse, but due to the shortage of nurses at area schools, still helps out at some of the local schools.
The Schletewitz family is committed to sustainable farming practices and is working toward being certified organic by 2010. The family philosophy is to grow what they themselves enjoy eating, and their goal is to provide wholesome food for others to enjoy. They grow a variety of fruits on 300 acres that ripen in succession over four seasons, starting with apricots and ending with grapes.
