History/Philosophy: Judy and Glenn Nagamine are the second generation to farm their sunny, 8-acre farm in Pajaro Valley. They have been growing organic produce since 1998. The Nagamine’s goal is to provide you with the freshest, highest quality produce possible. “We carefully control the growing conditions, so our crops are unsurpassed in quality,” said Judy.
Year-round at the farmers markets, you’ll find a wide range of Nagamine produce because all of their crops are grown in greenhouses made of glass, fiberglass, or plastic. Foods typically available year-round include English and Japanese cucumbers, lettuce, fresh herbs, and a limited supply of tomatoes. Seasonally, you’ll find an abundant supply of tomatoes, basils (Genovese and specialty varieties), haricot vert French filet beans, mustard greens (mizuna and spicy green varieties), and even catnip for your furry, curious friends.
Judy and Glenn are always exploring the addition of new produce. All crops are grown in soil, not hydroponically. And since the growing area is limited in the greenhouses, plants that normally stretch out in open fields are grown vertically. Imagine cucumber and tomato plants climbing up toward the sun, not out!
Celebrating over 10 years of organic certification, A. Nagamine Nursery was certified by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) in December, 1998. The farm is inspected annually by CCOF to ensure that strict organic regulations are maintained.
“We enjoy talking to customers about recipes and uses for the produce we grow, or answer questions about our farm. So please feel free to ask anytime!” says Judy.
Judy has served on the board of directors for the Monterey Bay Certified Farmers Market since 2006 and was elected vice president for the 2009 season. Judy and Glenn are proud to support local organizations such as Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF), and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties.
