History and Philosophy

An Aromas native, Ron is a third-generation farmer growing in the area. His grandfather John Borba emigrated from the Azores in the early 1900s, settling in Aromas. John began growing apricots on property that is still owned by the family. Ron’s late parents George and Sadie grew and dried apricots.

Established in 1970, Borba Farms eventually moved away from growing apricots and began growing apples. As the business expanded, vegetable and other fruit crops were added. Consisting of approximately 77 acres, Borba Farms is located on four different farms — two in Aromas and two in Watsonville. Three of the farms became certified organic in 2010. The fourth, the original eight-acre farm, is in the process of becoming certified organic.

The Borbas decided to switch from conventional farming to organic due to customer demand. Prior to joining the Monterey Bay Certified Farmers Markets in 2012, Borba Farms has sold their produce at other farmers markets since 1992. The Borbas are currently at six different San Francisco Bay Area farmers markets.
