History and Philosophy

Zena Foods is a Mediterranean food company in Monterey Peninsula that began as Baba Foods in 2006 and was renamed Zena Foods in February, 2010. Zena Food is the collaboration of husband and wife team, Ahmed Zainine who is originally from North Africa, and Josie Rowe, an accomplished chef. The couple enjoys bringing creative combinations of the flavors and textures of the Mediterranean to the farmers market.

“Our food is very versatile; it can be used as an accompaniment or side dish to your main entrée, or as small meal. It is very popular with vegans and vegetarians; all our products are vegan except the feta cheese salads,” says Ahmed.

Ahmed and Josie complement each other perfectly as business partners. Ahmed loves socializing and interacting with people at the farmers markets, whereas Josie’s realm is the kitchen. All Zena Foods are freshly made by Josie with the help of a few very part time employees. Josie’s love affair with cooking and food began as a child. She was raised on the Nepenthe property, grew up in the Nepenthe Restaurant kitchen and worked at the restaurant as a teenager. Josie starting cooking professionally at age 17 and was mentored by many outstanding chefs. She has worked as a pastry chef and ran her own catering company and café in Monterey named, Diva Dulce.

The Zena Foods philosophy: “We are committed to consistently offering the highest quality and freshest foods with a Mediterranean flair. We love feeding people healthy and delicious foods that keeps them coming back for more!” says Josie.
