History and Philosophy

Bar-D Ranch was established in 1985 on a hillside above beautiful Elkhorn Slough. The farm is named for the cattle ranch owned by Steve’s grandfather, John Dwyer, in Texas. Steve spent most of his childhood with his grandparents who raised cattle, dry-farmed wheat, and owned a few oil wells.

Meyer lemons were the first crop planted at Bar-D Ranch. The Jones then began growing broccoli year-round from organic seedlings they purchased. They added other crops as they discovered what fruit and produce can thrive in the cool, foggy summers and temperate winters of the central coast.

Sustainable farming practices have always been used on the farm. Everything is done by hand at Bar-D-Ranch — the planting, weeding, harvesting, and packing. This enables the Jones to maintain very high standards for quality, cleanliness, freshness, and taste, which keeps loyal customers coming back for more.

Karen Morgan, Patti and Steve’s daughter-in-law, sells the farm’s produce at the farmers markets, with the help of one or more of her four enthusiastic sons. Steve is teaching Karen about farming so that she can take on more responsibility, and give him and Patti some long deserved rest time.
