History and Philosophy

Established in 2009, Fogline Farm is a fully integrated organic farm located on the historic Manildi Ranch, nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains above Soquel. Overlooking the Monterey Bay at 900 feet above sea level, the farm benefits from an ideal growing climate of cool evenings and warm, sunny days.

With Barron and Caspary partnering with Wilson in 2010, Fogline Farm has made a commitment to steward the land in the most ecologically responsible way, which includes having the land free of chemical pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and genetically modified organisms. All of the animals are raised on pasture and fed organic feed with crops being rotated in order to take advantage of the fertility and pest management the animals provide. The farm is managed for each operation to provide a benefit to another, so that the farm uses minimal outside inputs and eliminates most of its waste. The farm expects to be certified organic by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) in 2012.

The 38-acre Manildi Ranch is a certified California Heritage Farm that has been under cultivation since 1905 when Segundo Manildi finished his career as a lumberjack and purchased the property from the Capitola Land Company. Along with his brother and other lumberjacks, Segundo logged the property and began to carve out a living as a truck farmer, carting vegetables to sell on the streets of Santa Cruz. Later, he began planting fruit trees and grew grapes for wine. The grapes were pulled during prohibition, and apples quickly became the dominant crop of the region with the Manildis planting roughly 50 acres.

Currently in its third generation of family stewardship, the ranch continues to produce orchard fruit and wine grapes under the careful watch of Bruce Manildi, with whom Fogline Farm shares the property.
