This year the Monterey Bay Certified Farmers Markets will be celebrating its 40th anniversary! From our humble beginnings in 1976, when a small group of farmers gathered to sell their produce as a ‘farmers market’ to the current family of four farmers markets with over 90 vendors — as Catherine Barr would say, “We’ve come a long way, baby!”
In the spirit of our celebration, we have an exciting line up of events this year. Jordan Champagne from Happy Girl Kitchen Company will be giving a series of demonstrations at the MPC and Aptos markets about preserving techniques, from jams and pickles to sauerkraut. Chef Anne Baldzikowski, local author and culinary instructor, will also be returning this year to teach few cooking classes this summer. More details will be available in February.
Last but not least, the renowned watercolor artist, Diane Devine, will be creating the artwork for our anniversary poster. Diane is an ardent supporter of farmers markets and her artwork often features fresh flowers, fruits and vegetables. Many of you may know her artwork that is displayed at Gayle’s Bakery in Capitola. Before moving to San Francisco, Diane lived in the Santa Cruz area for years, and her garden was featured in the magazine, Country Gardens. Prior to becoming a full time artist, Diane was an accomplished caterer whose artistic flair and delicious food and pastries are legendary. Today, her love of beautiful fruits, vegetables and flowers are transformed into her colorful paintings. Visit her online gallery to enjoy more of her work.
